Synthetic biology is an emerging interdisciplinary field that focuses on the design and creation of new biological components; and, the redesign of already existing biological systems to function as optimized entities.
It’s a new and emerging scientific subject where principles from electrical and computer engineering, biophysics, membrane science, and many more meet for applications in medicine, technology, research, education, environment, and even art!
Novel technologies have been developed due to SynBio including new biological parts, devices, and systems (e.g., tumor-seeking microbes for cancer treatment), as well as the re-design of existing, natural biological systems for useful purposes (e.g., photosynthetic systems to produce fuel). The above developments are just the beginning. Synbio has the potential to positively reshape medicine, industry, and agriculture in Cyprus.
